What is the 2018 FIFA World Cup?
Soccer, Football, Futebol, Fussball or Balompie anyone? Every four years, God blesses us all with the best sports tournament in the World, the FIFA World Cup!
The football tournament kicked off in 1930 in Uruguay, which by the way, became the first FIFA World Cup Champion, when they defeated Argentina with a final score of 4-2. Throughout the upcoming years, the tournament expanded from 24 to 32 teams. For the FIFA World Cup 2026, we are going to watch the best 48 teams of the World!
From 1930 to 1970, the Jules Rimet Trophy its awarded to the World Cup winning team. It was formerly merely known as the World Cup or Coupe du Monde, but in 1946 it was renamed after the FIFA president Jules Rimet who set up the first tournament. In 1970, Brazil’s third victory in the tournament entitled them to keep the trophy permanently. However, the trophy was stolen in 1983 and has never been recovered, apparently melted down by the thieves.
The top goal scorers for the tournament are as follows: (1) Miroslav Klose – Germany [16 goals], (2) Ronaldo – Brazil [15 goals], (3) Gerd Muller – Germany [14 goals], (4) Just Fontaine – France [13 goals], (5) Pele – Brazil [12 goals], (6) Jurgen Klinsmann – Germany & Sandor Kocsis – Hungary [11 goals both]
What to expect on this FIFA 2018 World Cup edition?
Brazil is the country with the most Championships, with five trophies, and Germany on second place, with four cups.
